Traces

An ongoing series of work exploring the traces of ourselves we leave in the world mirroring both the transient and impermanent nature of our existence.

Traces I, 2022

A series of ten photographs. The first row shows a shaft of light from a window on a wall. The wall appears as a grey gradient in contrast to the light, darker in the top right corner. The light is a slanted rectangular shape, with a hard edge on the left of the image, falling away to the right. There are stringy shadows through the shaft of light that appear to be made by vegetation outside the window. In each image the pattern of light and dark is slightly different. The second row of five images show a hazy orb of orange light rising from the bottom of each image against a dark blue background. The orb is more round in the first, third and fifth image, taking up between one half and two thirds of the image. In the second and fourth image the orb is more oval shaped, taking up the bottom third of the image. There is a shadowy band under each orb.

Traces II, 2022

A series of ten photographs shows a camera obscura inside a bedroom. A camera obscura room is created when all the light is blocked out apart from a small hole that allows light in, projecting the outside landscape upside down onto the surfaces of the room. The top row shows a red brick flat with white windows and a tall grey tower block behind, projected against different areas of a white bedroom wall, a wooden wardrobe and a radiator. The first image also includes part of a silhouette of a person in the bottom right corner and a green double decker bus is also seen passing by. The bottom row of images includes some greenery and the road in the projection, and different parts of a bed with a Miffy cushion, bedside tables, a house plant, a chest of draws, and a TV in the room.
